Why I Now Use Soothe2 On Everything

Soothe2 first popped up onto my radar at some point in 2020. A fellow engineer of mine asked if I had tried out the updated Soothe to which I replied, “I don’t know what that is.” 

I’m almost certain he scoffed at me and then responded with, “I can’t say enough good things about Soothe2. Using it is almost like cheating. I highly recommend you try it out.”

I confess I did not jump online to download it that day or even that week. However, when I finally pulled the trigger on it I was shown almost immediately what all the hype was about. 

What Is The Soothe2 Plugin?

Nope, it’s not the title of a new Kenny G instrumental chord book, so if that was your guess you lost this round. Soothe2 is a dynamic resonance suppressor made by Oeksound. Soothe 2 actively and automatically applies reduction in what is essentially real time to target frequencies.

It boasts the ability to do this without affecting any of the surrounding frequencies, which yields a smoother sound. To be clear, Soothe2 is not a Compressor or an EQ so keep that in mind.  

At first thought Soothe2 sounds almost too good to be true. There are a bunch of plugins and services on the market that claim to automatically do “something” to your tracks which makes them better. For example, a quick internet search will provide you with a number of websites that use an algorithm to master your songs in a matter of minutes. Many of these services and wonder plugins are, for lack of a better term, snake oil.  They don’t deliver on what they promise and aren’t worth the time or cost.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Soothe2 is one of those plugins that does exactly what it claims to do. Not only does it do its job, but it does it extremely well. Reduction kicks in based on the parameters you set and only on the target frequencies. This leaves you with a clean and balanced sound, which is transparent and does not sacrifice timbre.

The interface is simple to use and comes with a ton of great presets, making it even easier to correct trouble areas quickly and get quality sound out of your project. Soothe2 can help tame harshness, clean up low-end muddiness, soften bright sounds and wrangle tonal balance.

You can use Soothe2 on individual tracks, on a bus, or even in the mastering phase. 

Now that we’re all caught up to speed, I’d like to talk about one of the many ways I’ve successfully utilized this plugin to resolve an issue. 

That’s An Awful Sound?

While working on mixing a beat tape for a client I came across an issue I am no stranger to but often find beyond frustrating. The client provided individual stems for every instrument except the drums. In place of tracks consisting solely of kicks, snares, hi hats and the like, I was given a single wav file containing the entire drums section. Whenever I receive files like this I always ask the client if they can provide things more broken down.  If they cannot (which is often the case) then I simply treat the drums file as though it was a drum bus.

In this case I quickly discovered the drums file contained a sound I did not care for at all. After listening to it soloed a few times and then looking at it via a spectrum, I determined the issue to be somewhat within the kick itself.  More specifically, the very end of the kick sample made a sound at around 2700kHz and around 11000kHz that was basically awful. Initial instinct is to go in with an EQ, isolate those parts of the frequency range and pull down the gain until the sound becomes more manageable. 

This may have worked fine if the kick was on a track all by itself, but unfortunately it wasn’t. Doing that to this particular drum track would only slightly tamed the sound and result in making that entire section of the drums too quiet. 

Option two is of course to manually cut out and appropriately fade each and every time the kick makes that sound. I personally hate this option because it is tedious. I also hate this going this route because you can and will run into other issues you’ll need to solve, such as the noticeable difference of room tone between each clip.     

On top of that the client had a pretty small window of time in which they wanted the project finished, so I decided to put Soothe2 to the test.

Is Soothe2 Worth It?

Within literally 30 seconds of loading the plugin on the drum track, I was already hearing drastic improvement. I will point out that I used Soothe2 enough prior to this time to be at least partially familiar with it.

Having already identified some pretty specific problem frequencies, I started by setting the frequency parameters to focus on those. What’s great about this is that you can make the selection as wide or tightly focused as you need it to be.

Then I ensured the stereo mode setting near the bottom left corner was set to Mid |Side. Along with that, I set the balance more towards the Mid since the majority of the drum track was in the center with very little sound making its way to the sides.

Next, I started adjusting the Depth. The higher the depth setting the more reduction is applied. I like to turn it all the way up to start with then slowly dial it back until I’m happy with what I’m hearing. This method may not work for everyone, so do not take this as a stone rule.

You can choose to work in Soft or Hard modes. While Hard can be useful, Soft will give you much more transparent results.

One of my favorite features on this thing is the Delta option. If Delta is engaged, you only hear the sound being removed. After a few other minor tweaks I selected the Delta mode and sure enough there was that pesky sound I’d been trying to eliminate. This took me less than two minutes total.

The best part of all is that it applies reduction when it is needed and only when it’s needed. In the case of my drum track issue, when the harshness at the end of the kick showed up I could clearly see and hear the corrective reduction happening. When the snare and hi hats followed, the plugin let them roll right on past like an Atlanta airport security officer on a snack break.

As it turns out my friend was right: using it almost feels like cheating. Tasks and issues that could take hours of fine-tuning using other methods are resolved rapidly and leave behind amazing results.

To put it simply a mixing console provides the user with the ability to organize, control and modify audio signals. To make more sense of this, lets break down a few features you’ll find on a mixing console.

The first thing most people think of when they think of a mixing console for a recording studio is a big desk covered in faders. Each fader or “channel” controls a different part of the audio. In the case of a recording or mixing studio, the channels are usually assigned to a specific instrument or element of a piece of music.

For example, one channel might be setup for guitar while another channel might be setup for an entire drum kit. A channel that is setup for multiple instruments or parts like in the case of the drum kit is called a “Bus.”   

The general public has watched enough music videos and movies to have a grasp of what they think the faders of each channel do, and in part they’re right. If you move a fader upwards or away from where the audio engineer is sitting, generally that will increase the volume or gain of that particular channel.

The channels on a mixing console often have other controlling features such as the ability to “pan” audio more to the left or right of the stereo field, the ability to mute or silence selected channels and send part or all of the audio from a channel to selected audio effects.

Some mixing consoles have audio inputs and outputs to receive and send audio signal directly into their circuits while others act only as a control unit for a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation).

We’re going to dive more into digital mixing consoles, analog mixing consoles, midi and midi over usb mixing consoles a little later in this post. For now, lets tackle how you might use a mixer in your home studio.     

What Are Mixers Used For in a Home Studio?

In big studios and home project studios alike a mixing console or mixer would be used in an effort to have more control over the audio being mixed. In the case of my home studio, I use a mixing console that is simply a midi over usb control unit for my DAW.

It sends midi (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) signals to the DAW on my computer via a usb cable. Unlike classic mixing consoles that have specific circuitry which adds to or “colors” the audio signal a midi mixing control console does not add anything to the audio signal. 

By using the faders and other controls on the console instead of clicking around with the mouse, I can better fine-tune mixes for clients at a faster rate. I can also automate gain and other settings during playback or recording.

This technique is really useful specifically when working on getting vocals to sit just right with the rest of the mix. Vocals as a whole are a very dynamic instrument and will sound much better if their channel isn’t set to the same volume for the duration of an entire song.

In a classic studio environment the mixing engineer would make subtle changes to the vocal channels by constantly monitoring and adjusting gain as necessary during the recording process or playback processes. This is referred to as “Riding the Faders”.

If you have a home recording studio setup that is geared towards recording your band and friends bands you might not be as interested in the mixing and mastering side of things. However, that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t benefit from having a mixing console.

If you consider all the instruments and players that make up a band, you have a lot to try to control. All the individual instruments could be routed into the mixer inputs and assigned to different channels.

Done correctly the gain of each instrument could be adjusted independently of each other which would yield better control over the entire band. This would help result in a higher quality song. If the bass guitar was too loud it could easily be turned down a fraction of a decibel or more without affecting the set gain of the lead guitar.

Will a Mixing Console Improve Sound Quality in a Home Studio?

Short answer, yes! Whether you’re using a midi controller type console like I do or a console that has physical inputs and outputs for audio, the sound quality can most definitely be improved by adding a mixing console to your home studio setup.

Utilizing a mixing console will give you more control of your individual instruments or audio channels. Having this added control opens up the possibilities to better fine tune your mixes in a truly hands on way. It is possible to mix without a mixing console but the process can take longer and will likely be less organic in nature.

Additionally, if you were to use an analog mixing console for recording and mixing, you would be able to hear a noticeable difference in the audio due in part to the circuitry of the console itself. Some of the digital consoles on the market are also capable of coloring the sound. If proper mixing techniques are applied these console features can help yield a unique, warm, dynamic and full mix.

What Should I Look for in a Home Recording Studio Console?

Before you start looking for a mixing console, you’ll need to establish your needs including required inputs and outputs, desired number of channels, what you’ll be using the console for, available physical space and of course budget. Once you’ve sorted those out only then should you start shopping around.

One of the first things I suggest to know about any piece of studio equipment is build quality. The more questions you ask and find answers to, the more knowledge you have to make the best choice for your home studio.

You might have your eye on what appears to be a great option for you only to discover that behind the flashy features is a rushed cheaply made product. It doesn’t make any sense to buy something that isn’t going to last even if you’re swimming in disposable capital so do your research.

Another thing you’ll need to know is how the mixing console will interface with the rest of your studio. If it’s an analog or digital mixer what type of inputs does it offer? Do you have those types of connections on your current gear?

If you’re looking at a midi controller type console you’ll want to confirm that it will work with the DAW you use. Some midi controllers come with presets for multiple software options while others are designed for use with one DAW.

I’m of the mind that if a console is going to make things more complicated due to issues working with what you already have in your studio then you’re not improving anything. Instead, you’re going to wind up spending time trying to get things to work together instead of focusing on making and mixing better audio.

A few other features I considered when I was initially shopping for a mixer were touch sensitive controls and motorized faders. I don’t consider them to be a must have but it certainly helps me. Some consoles don’t offer motorized faders but that doesn’t mean they’re not a good option. As I said before, it really truly depends on you and your studio’s needs.          

Digital Mixers Vs Analog Mixer: Which One Is Better for a Recording Studio?

Digital mixing consoles and Analog mixing consoles do very similar things but not in the same manner. A number of digital consoles offer preamp emulation or variation options. Digital mixing consoles offer more fine tuned features for audio processing as well as onboard effects. Many of these effect features are useful for dialing in the sound you want for individual channels but it can be a little more involved when it comes to accessing them.

An analog mixing console is more straightforward. Aside from the controls on the console itself the real draw to getting one is the way in which the audio is colored by the circuitry. Each model and manufacturer have different circuits the audio passes through and the result can be different for each.

While a large number of digital mixers can act as an audio interface to connect to a DAW a true analog mixer does not so you’ll need to consider what audio interface to use if you’re planning to record into your computer.

If you’re at the point where you’ve decided that an analog console is what your home studio needs I suggest listening to music mixed with that specific model. Listen to as much of it as you can find. This will give you a better picture of how the audio is colored by the console, which will better help you make a final decision.

The Best Audio Mixing Consoles for your Home Recording Studio

Below I’ve put together a condensed list of mixing consoles that are ideal for a home recording studio. I have personal experience with each of these units either in my own home studio or in a similar studio environment. I believe this list is an excellent starting point to finding the best mixing console for your home recording studio.

Finding the best recording studio mixing console can seem like a challenge, but if you use the pointers above you should end up with the perfect one for your needs.

Having an external HD is important for making beats on a computer for 3 main reasons.

Reason 1: Any music production software you choose will include sound files that need to be stored at installation and accessed by the software during use.  If you’re going to be making beats on a computer that has the minimum requirements for the software to run it is likely that the onboard hard drive will not provide the ideal storage space needed. 

Reason 2: As you begin to create beats using your computer you’re going to want to save those sessions so you can revisit them to make adjustments or to add on. Just as mentioned above it’s a good idea to have enough storage space for those sessions as well as the finished beats.  Chances are you’ll run out of space on you computer’s onboard hard drive quickly if you chose to save everything to it.

Reason 3: When you’re making beats on your computer one key to staying productive is organization.  If you store all your work in folders on your desktop your beats could get lost, forgotten or even deleted by mistake.  Storing all the beats you make on your computer to an external hard drive is the best way to keep everything organized.

3: Daw (Digital Audio Workstation)

A digital audio workstation or DAW is the software you’ll be using on your computer to make beats.  DAWs are used for everything from recording to mixing and mastering and yes to beat making.  If you want to make beats using your computer you’re dead in the water without a DAW.  

My Recommendation: Ableton Live 10 (intro)

Why I like it:

I’m a big fan of Ableton Live.  I use it for composition, recording, production, arrangement, mixing and mastering.  The interface is easy to use and comes with a ton of options that can help beat makers craft music in a way that is unique to them. 

Many of my colleagues also use Ableton Live for making beats and while we’re all using the same software it’s versatile enough that we go about creation in a different way. The Simpler instrument is extremely useful for sampling and rearranging audio while making beats. 

Ableton’s Warp features are also helpful.  Unlike music stored in other DAWs, the music in Ableton Live remains “elastic“ at all times. Ableton Live is capable of time-warping samples while streaming them from disk so as to synchronize them with the session’s tempo.

The Intro version Includes 1500+ sounds (5+GB), 29 effects and 3 instruments (Simpler, Impulse and Drum Rack).  That’s more than enough to get you started making beats.

Secondary Option: Reason 11 (intro)

Why I like it:

Reason was the first software I used for making beats when I was transitioning into the world of production on a computer.

I love that the interface emulates a traditional rack that houses audio equipment.  If you’re a visual learner this one may be for you.  Like most production software you can choose from a list of digital equipment to work with such as drum machines and synthesizers. 

However, Reason’s unique interface displays your selected instrument as though you were looking at a physical piece of hardware.  Some of Reason’s features include the option to turn the gear around to the backside and to change the audio routing by using the mouse to move the cords from plug to plug.  This allows you to customize instruments and effects to almost endless possibilities. 

Reason 11 can be used as standalone DAW or as a Plugin (digital instrument) inside another DAW.  Reason 11 Intro comes with 33 instruments & effects and 7000 device patches, loops and samples.

4: Midi Controller

A Musical Instrument Digital Interface or Midi device is used to send and receive control signals.  Midi controllers come in numerous forms but since we’re focused on making beats we’ll stick to Midi Keyboards and Midi drum machines. 

A Midi Keyboard or Midi drum machine is used to control digital instruments inside your DAW.  For example if you want to play a digital synthesizer from the list of instruments included with your DAW you would physically play the melody on your Midi Keyboard.           

My Recommendation: Akai Professional MPK225

Why I like it:

I like the MPK line from Akai for a number of reasons.  An MPK is not just a midi keyboard it also has drum pads and either knobs or faders depending on the model for controlling mixer and effects settings in your DAW.  Akai has a long history of making both analog and digital high quality equipment. 

The keys on the MPK are Semi-Weighted.  If you’re a piano player of any level this can and will make a difference to you.  The drum pads are back lit and there is an lcd display screen where you can scroll through control presets for different DAWs.

Budget Option: Korg nanoPAD2

Why I like it:

While the Korg nanoPad is small and only made up of drum pads they are velocity-sensitive.  The nanoPad also has an X-Y Touchpad that allows you to control some effects in your DAW.  If you’re using a drum sequencer or other instrument sequencer for making beats a midi device like the nanoPad will do the job. 

The nanoPad is compact and lightweight so if you’re planning to take your production tools mobile this controller could be right for you.  Korg has a rich history of manufacturing quality music equipment dating back to the 60s so you can be sure this little unit will perform.

5: Headphones

You may have heard someone say before “you can use any set of headphones for making beats.”  While this is partially true you want to consider the fact that the headphones you use can affect the results of your production. 

First and foremost I recommend steering clear of any headphones that require batteries. Headphones of that type are going to put enhanced emphasis on certain frequencies such as the low end which does not give you a true representation of what your beats sound like.  Your beats could then potentially be more complicated for a mix engineer to make sound right. 

I also suggest avoiding ear buds. They do not block the entire ear from outside noise and as a result could lead to distraction.

Another tip is to look for a set of closed back headphones.  Closed back headphones are commonly used for recording and production while open back headphones are used for mixing and mastering. 

Something else to consider is comfort.  Chances are you’ll be spending a great deal of time wearing your headphones while making beats and you don’t want something that causes discomfort.     

My Recommendation: Audio-Technica ATH-M50X

Why I like it:

These headphones are adjustable which helps with comfort.  They have detachable cords, which is useful if you’re working in a small space or packing them into a bag for travel.

They are made with professional grade materials and are fully collapsible.  They have been critically acclaimed for their sonic performance and have a ton of positive reviews including one from Sound on Sound writer Sam Inglis.

 Budget Option: Sennheiser HD280PRO 

Why I like it:

This set of headphones is currently the model I am using for recording and making beats in my studio.  I actually own two pairs because I needed an extra set and was already familiar with their performance. 

In my opinion they are some of the best bang for the buck closed back headphones.  They add a little warmth to the audio but overall they provide natural sounding results, which makes it easy to fine tune things during the beat making process.  They are adjustable for comfort and constructed of professional grade materials.

Before you dive into choosing acoustic treatments and audio interfaces, the most important home recording studio equipment to purchase first is a powerful laptop or desktop computer.

In today’s world the odds are that you already have a personal computer at home, but your everyday device for writing emails and accessing social media isn’t going to cut it when you start really diving into recording, mixing and mastering.

You need one that is able to have the processing power for what you want to be doing so that you’re not causing your computer to work too hard. You also want one that’s going to be durable and that has enough onboard storage for all of your music files and session files, among other things.

Acoustically treating your home recording studio is an essential step that you shouldn’t skip. While you can mix and master almost anywhere, you need a space that has been properly treated in order to really hear the nuances of your music making.

Best Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) Software for a Home Recording Studio

Essentially, a Digital Audio Workstation (or DAW) is your software. Before computers were used in the recording process, recording was done using a mixing console and finalized on tape.

A DAW is basically a software version of the multi-tracks that are found on a physical mixing console.

Having a DAW means that you can mix music in a more compact space (like sitting on a plane with your laptop), as opposed to having a huge and expensive mixing console that takes up the majority of your home studio.

Either way, you need a quality DAW if you’re making music using a computer. Otherwise, there’s no way to get your audio recorded, mixed and mastered.

An audio interface is a device that sends an audio signal (usually through a USB port) into the computer and into your Digital Audio Workstation. It also gives you the ability to send audio from the computer back out to a set of studio monitors.

Choosing the right audio interface matters. You need to consider:

• How many devices you’ll be recording during a typical session
• The number of inputs you’ll be using (like microphones, instruments etc)
• If your inputs need to be mono or stereo
• How many outputs you want (to speakers and/or headphones)

Best Headphones for a Home Recording Studio

When you are looking at headphones for your home recording studio, you’ll want to think about what you will be focusing primarily on in your work.

If you are generally focused only on recording, and plan to have a mixing engineer handle the rest for you, then closed-back headphones are the way to go.

On the other hand, if you plan on spending a lot more time learning the mixing side of things, a pair of quality open-back headphones is better for you.

Ideally, you’ll want to have one pair of headphones from each category, but when you’re just getting started this isn’t the most important thing. Focus on choosing one that best fits your needs right now.

Best Studio Monitors for a Home Recording Studio

Studio monitors are essentially the speakers you listen to your music back on during the recording, mixing and mastering process.

When choosing the best studio monitors for a home recording studio, you’ll want to consider the size of your room.

If you have a small space, you don’t need a larger set of monitors. They’ll be too loud for the room, even at low volume. If you have a larger room, a bigger set of monitors might be exactly what you need.

Best Microphone for a Home Recording Studio

Not all microphones are created equal, especially when it comes to how many different ways microphones are now used in home recording studios.

Will you be recording vocals? Voiceover work? Are you working on a podcast, or maybe looking to record ambient noise?

It’s likely that you’ll be using your mikes for more than one application. When you’re getting started I recommend finding a microphone that can be utilized for multiple purposes to give you more options.

Keep in mind that in this case build quality will equal performance. Low quality microphones are less likely to yield high quality recordings.

Similarly to when you’re choosing the best microphone for your home recording studio, you want to think about how you’ll be using that mike.

If you’ll be sitting in a chair recording a podcast, your needs are different than someone who is capturing vocals for music recording. You’ll also want to think about build quality, and be sure you find one that is easily adjustable.

A pop filter goes between the vocalist and the microphone. It captures some spit and other particulates that come out of the mouth during recording, which helps to protect your microphone.

A pop filter also helps restrict certain types of air flow and vocal noises, helping to minimize those sounds in the recording.
